Surfshark Review 2026: Price, Privacy, Speed & Verdict
Affiliate disclosure: whoismyisp.app is reader-supported. If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a commission. This never changes what we write: our verdicts are based on official provider information, published audit reports, and independent third-party testing.
Verdict: Surfshark is the best value in VPNs right now. For less than any other major provider you get unlimited devices, 100% RAM-only servers, a long and verifiable audit record, and a genuinely useful feature bundle on the One plan (antivirus, ad blocking, breach alerts). Nearby speeds are excellent and streaming mostly works, but it is less consistent than NordVPN at long distance, and there are a few caveats: a 15-minute IP retention window, a soft kill switch that leaked in one test, and steep renewal prices. If budget and device count matter most, this is the one to buy.

Pricing and plans in 2026
Surfshark undercuts every major competitor, and its Black Friday sale is live now. The 2-year plans include 3 extra months, stretching the first term to 27 months. Prices, checked October 18, 2026:
| Plan | Price (first 27 months) | You also get | Renews at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $2.49/month ($67.23) | VPN on unlimited devices, ad and cookie blocking, Alternative ID | $79/year |
| One | $2.49/month ($67.23) | Adds Antivirus, breach Alert, private Search, scam protection | $99/year |
| One+ | $4.49/month ($121.23) | Adds Incogni data removal and identity theft coverage up to $1M (US, excl. NY) | $119/year |
The Black Friday quirk right now: Surfshark One, the mid tier, costs the same as Starter ($2.49/month), so the antivirus and breach alerts are effectively free. Shorter terms cost more per month (the 1-year plan is about $3.39/month). Monthly billing is far more expensive.
The renewal caveat: the intro price is exceptionally low, which makes the renewal look dramatic. Starter renews at $79/year, roughly 2.6 times the intro rate. That is still cheaper than most rivals' renewals, but note it, because a US class action about auto-renewal disclosures is currently pending in court and billing surprises are the most common complaint in user reviews.
There is a 7-day free trial on mobile (a payment method is required), and the 30-day money-back guarantee covers card, PayPal, and crypto payments, which is not true of every VPN.

Features: what you get with Surfshark
Encryption and protocols
Surfshark defaults to WireGuard, which became fully post-quantum (ML-KEM key exchange) in October 2026, with AES-256 and ChaCha20 encryption. OpenVPN is available for manual setups with Camouflage Mode obfuscation, alongside IKEv2 and Dausos, a new in-house protocol that is currently in beta on macOS only.
Kill switch and leak protection
Surfshark's kill switch has Soft and Strict modes. Important: in independent testing, the default Soft mode leaked traffic during a PC restart, so switch to Strict mode in settings. With Strict enabled, the tester's connection stayed locked through forced app kills and cable pulls.
Ad blocking and extras
CleanWeb blocks ads, trackers, and malicious sites, and a separate Cookie pop-up Blocker cleans up consent banners. In the same blocklist test used across providers, Surfshark caught 79% of ad and tracker domains, ahead of NordVPN (76%) and ExpressVPN (71%), but behind PIA (96%). Other extras: Dynamic MultiHop (two servers), Rotating IP, NoBorders for restrictive networks, Bypasser split tunneling, and Everlink, which reconnects within seconds after network hiccups.
Security bundle (One and One+)
- Antivirus: real-time and scheduled scans, webcam protection; certified 6/6 for protection by AV-Test.
- Alert: email, credit card, and ID leak monitoring with reports.
- Scam protection: AI checks for scam texts and emails.
- One+ adds Incogni: automated data removal from brokers and people-search sites.
- Alternative ID: masked email and a generated persona for signups you do not trust.
Privacy and security: does Surfshark keep logs?
Surfshark is based in the Netherlands, so GDPR applies to all customers regardless of location, and Dutch law does not require data retention. Its no-logs policy has been independently audited twice by Deloitte (2023 and 2025) under the ISAE 3000 standard, on top of six other public audit reports: Cure53 (browser extensions and infrastructure, 2018, 2021, and 2026), SecuRing (apps and infrastructure, 2025), MASA for the Android app, and AV-Test for the antivirus. No audit has found a critical vulnerability.
The 15-minute caveat: one piece of data is kept briefly. Surfshark temporarily stores the IP address you connect from and deletes it within 15 minutes of your session ending, a window verified in the Deloitte audit. It exists to stop account abuse, and it means Surfshark is not a zero-IP-retention provider like some privacy-first rivals. Your browsing, DNS requests, and traffic are never logged.
Transparency and the September 2026 incident
Surfshark publishes quarterly transparency reports. In the July to September 2026 quarter, it received 23 government inquiries and 309,186 DMCA requests, and disclosed data in none of them (there were no warrants, national security letters, or gag orders).
In September 2026, Surfshark disclosed a breach of a misconfigured internal test server discovered on August 31. An unauthorized party accessed engineering material and an isolated proxy server. No user data or VPN services were affected, and Surfshark says credentials were rotated and an additional independent audit was commissioned.
Speed and streaming performance
Independent speed results vary more for Surfshark than for the other two providers we cover, which is worth understanding before you buy:
- Gizmodo (October 2026): 9.6% average download loss on a 190 Mbps connection; nearby UK servers lost only 1.8%.
- PCMag (May 2026): 7.7% download decrease.
- Tom's Guide (April 2026): 1,012 Mbps on a gigabit line, but "varied wildly" between servers.
- TechRadar (October 2026): 2,005 Mbps to a nearby server, and 1,739 Mbps Europe to US.
- CNET (September 2026): 21% average speed loss, a much harsher result.
The pattern: nearby speeds are excellent, sometimes class-leading for the price, while long-distance latency is higher than NordVPN or ExpressVPN. For browsing, streaming, and downloads from nearby servers, you will rarely notice.
Streaming works on most services but is less consistent than the top names. In October 2026 testing, Surfshark unblocked 13 of 14 services including Netflix US, and BBC iPlayer played at 1080p. Other testers hit failures: Netflix UK and Australia in one round, Prime Video outside the UK in another. Switching servers, or disabling CleanWeb for ad-funded streamers like ITV, usually fixes it. Torrenting is allowed on every server, though like NordVPN and ExpressVPN, there is no port forwarding.
Apps, devices, and support
This is Surfshark's headline feature: unlimited simultaneous devices on every plan. Apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Android TV, Apple TV, Fire TV, and Chromebook, plus browser extensions and manual router setups. Note that the extensions are proxies, which only protect browser traffic, and there is no Smart DNS for older smart TVs, so those need a router setup.
Apps are clean and consistent, though reviewers note fewer customization options than rivals. Support is 24/7 via live chat and email, with an extensive knowledge base, and independent testing found human agents took over from the bot within seconds and answered properly.

Surfshark vs NordVPN: NordVPN is faster and more consistent, with a deeper audit record; Surfshark is roughly $1/month cheaper, covers unlimited devices, and its One plan bundles security tools NordVPN charges more for. Our NordVPN review has the full comparison.
Surfshark vs ExpressVPN: ExpressVPN has stricter no-logs certifications, faster peak speeds, and a more polished app suite, but you pay more, connect fewer devices, and take on a more controversial ownership history. Our ExpressVPN review covers that in detail.
Who should get Surfshark?
- Households and big families: unlimited devices means one subscription covers everything.
- Budget-conscious buyers: it is the cheapest major VPN by a wide margin.
- Privacy on a budget: RAM-only servers and Deloitte-audited no-logs at this price is unmatched.
- Antivirus seekers: the One plan is currently the same price as Starter.
Skip it if you seed on private trackers (no port forwarding), want zero IP retention of any kind, need the most consistent streaming unblocking, or want a permanent free tier (there is none beyond the 7-day trial).
Surfshark FAQ
Is Surfshark worth it in 2026?
For most people, yes, especially at the current price. It is the best value among major VPNs: unlimited devices, RAM-only servers, real audits, and a useful security bundle. If maximum speed and streaming consistency matter more than price, NordVPN is the safer pick.
Does Surfshark keep logs?
It does not log your browsing, DNS requests, or traffic, and Deloitte verified this in 2023 and 2025. One exception: the IP address you connect from is stored temporarily and deleted within 15 minutes after your session ends.
How many devices can use one Surfshark account?
Unlimited. There is no device cap on any plan.
Does Surfshark work with Netflix?
Usually. It unblocked Netflix US in October 2026 testing, but other testers hit failures on Netflix UK and Australia. If a region is blocked, switch to another server in that country, and disable CleanWeb for ad-funded streaming apps.
What does Surfshark cost after the first term?
Starter renews at $79/year, One at $99/year, and One+ at $119/year. The jump from the intro price is large, so note the renewal date.
Can I try Surfshark for free?
There is a 7-day free trial on iOS and Android (payment method required), and every purchase is covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee, including crypto payments.
Is the September 2026 breach a problem?
It affected a misconfigured internal test server and an isolated proxy, not the VPN service or user data. The company rotated credentials and commissioned an additional independent audit. It is worth knowing, but it does not change the audited no-logs status of the service itself.
Final verdict
Surfshark wins on value. No other major provider gives you unlimited devices, RAM-only servers, a Deloitte-audited no-logs policy, and a security bundle for $2.49 a month. The trade-offs are real but specific: a 15-minute IP retention window, a kill switch default you should change, streaming that is good but not the most consistent, and a steep renewal. If you want the cheapest solid VPN for a whole household, buy Surfshark. If streaming consistency and speed are the priority, step up to NordVPN.
How we researched this review
This review is based on Surfshark's official product, pricing, and trust pages, its published audit reports and transparency reports, and independent tests carried out by established VPN reviewers in 2025 and 2026. Every figure is dated where it appears, prices were verified on October 18, 2026, and we update this page when deals or material facts change. We do not claim to have lab-tested Surfshark ourselves, and we have no relationship with Surfshark beyond the affiliate links, which never affect the verdict.
