Encryption and protocols
NordVPN defaults to NordLynx (built on WireGuard) with AES-256 encryption and post-quantum (ML-KEM) protection. There is also NordWhisper, a newer protocol for restrictive networks that block normal VPN traffic, plus classic OpenVPN and IKEv2. Privacy and security: does NordVPN keep logs?
No. NordVPN is based in Panama, which has no mandatory data retention laws, and its no-logs policy has been verified by independent auditors six times since 2018: twice by PwC (2018, 2020) and four times by Deloitte (2022 through 2025). What NordVPN stores is limited to account basics: your email, payment details, and last-session metadata used to enforce the 10-device limit. It does not store your IP address, DNS requests, browsing history, or traffic. The servers run on RAM only, so a reboot wipes them clean, and NordVPN runs its own DNS resolvers under the same policy.
What about the 2018 breach?
In 2019, NordVPN disclosed that one server in Finland had been accessed in March 2018 through an exploited remote-management system. The server was not keeping logs that could be stolen, and NordVPN says no user data was exposed. Speed and streaming performance
